Microarchaeology is concerned with the microscopic study of the sedimentary archaeological record. We use light microscopy on thin sections to study the microstratigraphy of archaeological sites. This microstratigraphy provides insights into the formation of the site, its depositional context and environmental setting and human activities. At the Vienna Laboratory for Microarchaeology, we focus on the formation history of Pleistocene sites, the sedimentary record of fire use and the formation history of sediment ancient DNA.
